First co-generation SOFC system (SOFC is combined with gas turbine) was installed in National Fuel Cell Research Center in University of California, Irvine. The system includes micro-turbine produced by Ingersoll-Rand Energy Systems, and has total electrical output of 220 kW: 200 kW by SOFC and 20 kW by micro-turbine.

In 1999 six US-based SOFC developers (Cummins-SOFCo, Delphi-Battelle, General Electric (GE), Siemens Westinghouse (SW), Acumentrics and FuelCell Energy (FCE)) joined Solid State Energy Conversion Alliance (SECA) Program.

SECA envisions development of commercial SOFC-based systems with output power up to 5kW by 2012.
